HISTORY
Kissaten is a traditional Japanese-style coffee house — a place to slow down, savor hand-dripped coffee, and let the world outside fade away.
For three generations, we have been brewing coffee in a quiet alley near Ise Grand Shrine.
Times change, but the care we put into every cup remains the same.
Kohaku Kissaten opened in a quiet back alley of Ise City. The first owner was devoted to in-house roasting and handmade custard pudding prepared fresh every morning. Word spread quickly among the locals. It all began with just 4 counter seats and 8 table seats.
Two more counter seats were added. Morning coffee lovers became loyal regulars, and Kohaku became a beloved gathering spot for the community. It was during this era that the recipe for our signature Kohaku Blend was perfected — and it remains unchanged to this day.
The second-generation owner took over, preserving the original flavors while expanding the food menu. The old-fashioned Napolitan spaghetti — made the traditional kissaten way — quickly became our most famous dish, drawing visitors from far and wide.
After 37 years, we undertook our first major renovation. The original dark wood counter and vintage lighting were carefully preserved, while the seating area was expanded to 20 table seats. We kept the retro charm intact while welcoming more guests than ever.
We introduced a fully non-smoking policy and installed free Wi-Fi, welcoming remote workers and a new generation of guests. While embracing modern comforts, we remain true to the Showa-era atmosphere that makes a kissaten special.
The third-generation owner has stepped in, carrying forward the art of in-house roasting from the grandfather and the culinary traditions from the father. With seasonal specials and new events, we continue to evolve. “To stay the same, we must keep changing” — that is the Kohaku Kissaten philosophy.
